The Ten Real Life Exploits That Da'esh / ISIS use to Hack The World.
The book is at pains to point out that these are not issues that are restricted to Islam, that all the world's major religions have extremists and that some of those extremists turn to violence. It also emphasises that Islam is not unusual in there being violent elements and political parties both promoting a similar agenda. In fact, within the book, it is repeatedly emphasised that Da'esh and groups such as Boko Haram, are not problems that can be blamed on Islam and that those who seek make that association are adopting their own flawed agenda. The book does not and is not intended to criticise the Islamic faith. In addition to the references to Da'esh and Islam, the book contains examples of terrorism by those purporting to represent other faiths and a wide range of other ideologies. This demonstrates that Da'esh is the current poster-boy for terrorism and it happens to have pirated the name of Islam but that the underlying exploits that it uses to hack the world are common to all forms of extremism and the violent expression thereof. To focus on Da'esh and Islamic extremism is, then, a mistake: it is but an example of a deeper and more widespread malaise.
Da'esh is able to create and use divisions within Islam to its own advantage. It is able to gather recruits from those whose view of Islam is based in a fundamentalist interpretation. Da'esh is able to identify differences of interpretation within sects and to capitalise on them. It then aims to bully those who follow a less restrictive interpretation of Islam or who do not follow Islam at all. But while Da'esh seeks to justify its actions by expressing an interpretation of Islam, the reality is that, like all revolutions and terrorism, its objectives are simple: the control of territory and wealth (and incidentally people) for the benefit of a self-appointed elite. The book demonstrates the similarities of objectives, language and tactics between religious extremists, fascists and communist hard liners.
Da'esh uses the shield of protections developed to combat bigotry while its supporters are, generally, free to adopt messages that are both incendiary and bigoted, ironically using free speech to denounce free speech, using anti-hate laws to prevent effective criticism by those who wish to contain the hate from those sharing its objectives. By dressing up as Muslims, Da'esh uses loyalty between Muslims as a means of dissuading dissent.
Da'esh is operating in a world where communications are almost instant and almost transparent - and where their messages can be hidden in plain sight amongst the thousand of millions of postings on bulletin boards such as Facebook and twitter, located with relative ease through facilities of search engines such as Google and Yahoo! Its means of communication are those preferred by its target group, the young and impressionable and, most dangerously, those who are self-educating without the balance that proper teaching brings. Again, these methods are used by extremists of all faiths and ideologies: Da'esh is not a special case - it is merely the current best case study of the direction that terrorism is taking.
